From South Australia to Surfers Paradise, Race One’s Lucy Derbyshire has captured the hearts of our surf sports community!
Lighting up the beach with her smile, crossing the finishing line with an ease of graciousness and sportsmanship, at just 21 years old, Lucy beautifully showcases just what it takes to be the Shaw and Partners Ironwoman Series Champion.
Paving her way forward with passion and utter determination, Lucy’s ongoing success continues to prove that despite illness and setback last season, hard work will always pay off!
“If someone told me last year that I would come back to the series the following year and win, I wouldn’t believe it,” she said.
“The last couple seasons it felt like I had come so close to winning a race, I started to lose belief in myself, so to win, just proved that trusting the process and working hard is the key to success!”
Growing up with her two sisters, both of whom are highly competitive in their respective sports, training and working towards her goals with partner and Ironman, Race One athlete Finn Askew, along with her family, friends and her Surfers Paradise clubmates and coaching team, Lucy has conquered her greatest feat thus far and there is no denying the importance of the incredible support team she is so grateful to have around her.
“I have just won my first Iron series at 21, but it is because of everything it took to get me here, the hard work, persistence and a whole team behind the scenes supporting me!”
Making the move from South Australia to the Gold Coast to pursue her childhood dreams, Lucy is igniting a fire of self-belief and ambition for those in the nation’s southern states!
Challenging herself daily with training, education and aspiring for success both in and out of the water, Lucy is fast becoming the perfect mentor for all aspiring athletes from grassroots through to our youth and master competitors.
“I love to challenge myself,” she said.
“I’m hard-working and driven. Racing and training are my job, but I want to own a business in the future, and I’m currently doing my diploma in social media marketing.”
Conquering her childhood dream upon the sand of North Burleigh, Lucy flew home on her Race One ski to claim the title of the 2024/25 Shaw and Partners Ironwoman Series Champion.
With her arms wide, her smile wider, Lucy crossed the finish line, captured the hearts of the surf sports community, and wrote her name into the history books.
“I couldn’t believe it; a childhood dream had just come true!”
