They call him BIG BAD BENNY.
But truly, he isn’t bad at all.
He’s big yes, but this gentle giant doesn’t have one bad bone in his body.
Weighing in at 102kg, fishing for fun and doing surf sports, pretty darn well, Race One’s Ben Carberry is the man mountain everyone needs in their life.
“I just love going fishing aye,” he laughed.
“Sometimes I just go fishing, and I don’t even catch a thing!”
For Ben, it’s been a year of change.
A carpenter by trade, the 2024/25 season has seen Ben put down his power tools and pick up his Race One surf craft fulltime.
Aspiring to give it everything he has this season; Ben has found a new profound enjoyment for surf sports.
“I’ve stopped working fulltime and backed up on the tools,
“I just wanted to give myself a chance to recover after training and the biggest thing for me has been not turning up to training (exhausted) and despising it.”

Turning his focus to training, racing and recovery, Ben has rekindled with his sport and the reason he now resides on the Gold Coast.
“I actually really enjoy the sport a lot more than I did when I was working. I felt like it was a chore and now when I do it, it’s my job this season and I ‘ve found I really, really enjoy it!”
Moving to the coast 11 years ago, pursuing Surf Lifesaving and dabbling in Rugby League, Ben showcased his talent and athletic ability across both sporting endeavors.
“In someways I wish I stuck with footy, but I don’t miss waking up with all the injuries,” he said.
“I chose surf sports because I found I was pretty good at it, and with my size, I don’t wake up sore and with large amounts of pain in my body.”
Powering around on his current choice of trade tool; his Race One ski, Ben is stoked to be spending his days chasing his goals and the waves of Burleigh Heads beach.
“I love my Race One ski,” he said elated.
“I love how it turns and catches waves and the runners!”
For big, not at all bad, Benny Carberry, the remainder of the season, is looking promising as he currently sits in pole position for the Shaw and Partners World Ocean Series Ironman point score.
With rumors floating around that you can catch him in his boat until the early hours of the morning before making it to the pool ahead of time for Kingys swim session, Race One’s Ben Carberry is living up to his self-described ‘relaxed’ persona.
“One word to describe me, I don’t know, that’s a tough one,” he laughed.
“Relaxed, yeah probably relaxed.”
